Drew McAthy's penalty kick goal in the 27th minute was virtually all of
the offense Saturday night in UC Santa Barbara's 1-0 Big West Conference
men's soccer victory at Cal State Fullerton.
The Gauchos (13-2-1, 6-2-0) posted their second shutout in a row on the
heels of sustaining their only two losses. The Titans (3-8-2, 1-4-0) saw
their modest 3-game home unbeaten streak stopped.
Freshman German Moreno was whistled for a hand ball in the penalty box
when he failed to make a routine tackle of McAthy and then touched the
ball as he tried to get up. McAthy got his team-high 12th goal of the
year when he beat Titan goalkeeper Matt Cowan to the lower left corner.
Cowan had to make only two saves while UCSB's Dan Kennedy had none as
the Titans failed to register a shot on goal in their nine attempts. They
didn't get a shot in the first 39 minutes of the match.
The only thing close to a regulation goal was a bullet by UCSB's Tino
Nunez from about 25 yards that Cowan collected with his mid-section in
the 59th minute. McAthy hit a soft header to Cowan for the only other
UCSB shot on goal.
UCSB was cited for 25 fouls to 11 by Fullerton in the defensive struggle.
The Gauchos also got all three yellow cards.
Fullerton plays at UC Riverside on Wednesday while the Gauchos host non-conference
rival UC Davis on Thursday night.
