Academic Counselor Selected for NCAA Conference Mar. 3, 2003 Fullerton, Calif.
Cal State Fullerton athletic academic counselor Jermaine Holmes has been
selected as a facilitator for the 2003 NCAA Leadership Conference to be
held May 25-29 at Disneys Coronado Springs Resort and Wide World
of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.
The conference was developed out of the success of the NCAA CHAMPS/Life
Skills Program. The conference is designed under the basic premise that
student-athletes are well positioned to be leaders and the NCAA needs
to encourage leadership through interactive and collaborative programs,
and to strengthen their leadership skills. He will be working with
hundreds of student-athletes from across the country. Training will take
place May 1-3 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Holmes, 31 on Saturday, joined the Titans staff in December from
Virginia Tech, where he graduated in 1996 with a degree in marketing and
earned a masters degree in resource management in 1998. He became coordinator
of student life on the Blacksburg campus in August of 1998 and was promoted
the following June to director.
Holmes was a captain of the Hokies Sugar Bowl champion football
team in 1995. He later signed as a free agent wide receiver with the Tampa
Bay Buccaneers of the National Football League and appeared in pre-season
games in 1996. On Nov. 18, 1995, he caught a pair of fourth-quarter touchdown
passes from Jim Druckenmiller to rally the Hokies to a 36-29 victory over
the rival Virginia Cavaliers.
