Clinch Top Seed in Pool C With 8-1 Win Mar. 15, 2002 – Fullerton, Calif. Box Score The No. 9 Cal State Fullerton softball team clinched the top seed in pool C on Friday night as the Titans banged out 13 hits and peppered No. 22 Florida State, 8-1, in the final game of pool play in the 2002 Kia Klassic at the Titan Softball Complex on Friday night. Fullerton improved to 23-9 overall on the season and has won its last 14 games and 15 of its last 16. The Titans are 3-0 in the Kia Klassic thus far. Florida State fell to 23-10 overall and 2-1 in the tournament. Titan junior Gina Oaks led the offensive barrage, going 3-for-5 at the plate with a run scored and an RBI. Jenny Topping, Yasmin Mossadeghi and Jodie Cox all had two hits on the day. Senior pitcher Christy Robitaille (5-3) allowed just the one run while scattering seven hits, walking two and striking out four in the complete-game effort. Jessica van der Linden (7-3) took the loss, allowing the eight runs (six earned) on 13 hits, walking five and striking out five. The Titans got started in the first, scoring a pair on a Monica Lucatero sacrifice fly and a single by Mossadeghi during which the centerfielder committed and error, allowing Topping to score from second base. Fullerton added another pair in the third on RBI singles by Mossadeghi and Cox for a 4-0 lead. Oaks had an RBI single in the fourth before Florida State got on the board in the bottom of the inning, on an RBI single by Elisa Velasco. The Titans capped off the game with a three-run seventh, opened by Cox's fourth home run of the season and closed things out with an unearned run on an error and Lucatero's second sacrifice fly of the game. With the top seed, Cal State Fullerton advances to play New Mexico in the first round of championship bracket play on Saturday morning at approximately 11 a.m. on field one. Should the Titans win, they would meet up with the winner of the Fresno State/Notre Dame at 7 p.m. ####
