Three Titans Earn All-Region Honors May 19, 2003 Fullerton, Calif.
Cal State Fullerton senior pitcher/outfielder Jodie
Cox was named as a 2003 All-West Region First-Team Selection while
seniors Gina Oaks and
Jenny Topping earned
second team honors as voted on by the coaches and announced by the NFCA
on May 14.
Cox, who earlier this month was named the Big West Conference's Co-Pitcher
of the Year, earned her second all-region honor after being named to the
second team last season.
She finished her senior season with a 21-7 overall record and a 1.06 ERA.
Cox was the first Titan pitcher to strikeout more than 200 batters in
a season since Tiffany Boyd did it in 1992 and finished her four-year
career with 699 strikeouts -- falling just three short of the school record.
She finished the conference season with a 12-0 record with a 0.47 ERA
-- the second straight year Cox has finished the Big West schedule with
an undefeated record in the circle.
Cox was named to the All-Big West Conference first-team as both a pitcher
and outfielder after also hitting .301 with six home runs, 31 RBI, and
34 runs scored on the year.
Topping, the only three-time Big West Player of the Year, earned second
team honors at first base after making the team for the last two years
at catcher. Topping finished the season with a .438 average, 11 doubles,
10 home runs and 36 RBI while walking 46 times this year.
Oaks, who earned all conference first-team honors as a utility player
and pitcher, hit .284 on the year with 44 runs scored, five home runs
and 20 RBI. She is the new school record holder with 150 runs scored,
breaking Sue Lewis' 19-year old school mark.
Oaks was also 19-8 in the circle with a 1.60 ERA and 180 strikeouts in
166 innings pitched.
All three players are now eligible for All-America honors, which will
be announced on Wednesday, May 21, prior to the start of the 2003 Women's
College World Series in Oklahoma City, Okla.
