Cox, Topping Honored by Big West Conference April 14, 2003 Fullerton, Calif.
Cal State Fullerton senior infielder Jenny Topping and senior pitcher
Jodie Cox were honored as the Big West Conference Co-Player and Pitcher
of the Week, respectively, it was announced on Monday, after helping the
Titans to a three-game sweep of Pacific this past weekend.
It is the third time this season that Topping has been honored and the
seventh time in 11 weeks that a Titan has been named Player of the Week.
Topping has been named Big West Player of the Week 10 times in her career,
the most by any single player since the league began handing out the award
in 1988.
The award is Coxs third of the year, and the fifth time overall
this season that the Titans have had the conferences Pitcher of
the Week. Cox has won the award eight times in her career, which stands
tied for fourth all-time in the history of the Big West.
Topping (Whittier, Calif./La Habra HS/Washington) was instrumental in
Fullertons three-game sweep of league-rival Pacific this past weekend,
hitting .429 with a double, home run and four RBI in the series. Her one-out,
three-run walk-off home run in the eighth lifted the Titans to a 3-0 win
in the opening game of the series and her run-scoring double in game two
proved to be the margin of victory for Fullerton in its 3-2 win in the
nightcap.
Topping had a hit in each of the three games, slugging 1.000 for the weekend
and notching an on base percentage of .600 after being walked three times.
She has hit safely in each of her last seven games and her game one home
run marked the second time this year she ended a game with a home run
(vs. Texas, Kia Klassic, March 12, 2003).
Cox (Lancaster, Calif./Quartz Hill HS) won both of her starts for the
third consecutive week, extending her conference winning streak to 17
consecutive starts, scattering just three base hits without allowing a
run in 11 innings of work.
She opened the weekend by striking out 14 batters in the opener (just
two short of her career high) and had six strikeouts in game three before
being lifted after three innings of work in the 9-0 victory. The Tigers
hit just .083 (3-for-36) against Cox this weekend and she notched her
third consecutive shutout with the victories.
Cal State Fullerton returns to action this Friday (April 18) when the
Titans open a three-game series with Long Beach State at 3 p.m. The two
teams will finish the series with a doubleheader on Saturday (April 19)
beginning at 1 p.m.
