Cox Earns Big West Pitcher of the Week Honors March 5, 2003 Fullerton, Calif.
Cal State Fullerton senior left-hander Jodie Cox (Lancaster, Calif./Quartz
Hill HS) was named the Big West Conference Pitcher of the Week on Wednesday
evening after her performance at the 2003 Worth Invitational hosted by
Cal State Fullerton.
It is the second pitcher of the week award for Cox this season after earning
the honor on Feb. 12. It is also the seventh career pitcher of the week
award for the Titan southpaw, ranking her in a tie for sixth on the leagues
all-time list. It is the fourth time in five weeks that a Fullerton pitcher
has won or shared the award this season.
Cox was 3-0 for the Titans in the circle at the Worth Invitational, posting
victories over No. 6 California, upstart Northwestern and No. 17 Oregon
State. She amassed a 0.95 ERA while allowing three earned runs on nine
hits in 22 innings of work. She walked just six batters while striking
out 31 opposing batters.
Opponents hit just .110 against Cox this past weekend, with just one of
the nine hits allowed going for extra bases. She struck out 13 batters
against Northwestern without walking anyone in the 1-0 Titan victory --
the fifth time in 10 starts this season she has struck out 10-or-more
batters. She also had nine strikeouts against California and Oregon State.
Overall, Cox is 6-4 on the season with a 1.51 ERA and 92 strikeouts in
69 1/3 innings of work. Opponents are hitting just .127 against the lefty
to go with her nine complete games and two shutouts on the year. Only
five of her 30 hits allowed this season have gone for extra bases.
Cal State Fullerton has the week off to prepare for the upcoming 2003
Kia Klassic the premier spring tournament in the nation. Ten teams
either currently ranked or receiving votes in the National Fastpitch Coaches
Association top 25 will be in the field, including six of the top 10 squads
in the country. Nine different conferences will also be represented in
the tournament, including three teams each from the Pacific-10, Big 12
and Big West Conferences.
The 16-team event begins on Wednesday (March 12) at 5 p.m. and runs through
the weekend with the championship game on Sunday (March 16) at 2 p.m.
