Titans Falter in Day One of ITA Regionals Oct. 24, 2002 Fullerton, Calif.
Cal State Fullerton's Ioana Sisoe and Jessica Martin
each won first-round matches in the qualifying draw of the 2002 Omni Hotels
West Region Women's Tennis Championships, but failed to qualify for a
spot in the main draw with second round losses on Thursday afternoon in
San Diego, Calif.
Sisoe defeated Hawaii's Stacy Hakikawa, 7-5, 2-6, 6-1, in the opening
round before falling to UCLA's Kate Jolson in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1.
Martin fell behind in her opening match with UCLA's Shilpa Joshi, 6-2,
in the first set, and was tied 1-1 in the second before Joshi had to retire
thereby advancing Martin to the second round. There, she met UC Riverside's
Kelly Takeshita, who triumphed, 6-1, 6-0.
In doubles qualifying, the duos of Martin and Ashley Dunbar and Carla
Rocha and Brittany Minna lost their first-round matches by the scores
of 8-0 and 8-6, respectively.
Freshman Ruya Inalpulat is the lone Titan alive in singles play, making
the main draw and will face UNLV's Tracie Chong on Friday. Inalpulat and
doubles partner Sisoe will open the main draw of doubles against USC's
Melissa Esmero and Bernadette Bayani.
