Long Beach State Sweeps Titans, 7-0 Feb. 19, 2004 Fullerton, Calif.
The Long Beach State (1-3) womens tennis team, ranked No. 61 in
the country, picked up its first win of the season with a 7-0 sweep over
Cal State Fullerton (3-3) on Saturday afternoon at the 49er Campus Courts.
The 49ers opened the season with three consecutive losses to teams ranked
in the top 50 in the country.
In singles play the 49ers won all six matches in straight sets. The closest
match came at the No. 4 position where freshman Sandra Rocha eased past
Mai-Ly Tran 7-6 (3), 7-6 (3).
At the No. 1 position, junior Nicole Bouffler defeated Ruya Inapulat,
6-3, 6-3 and at No. 2 singles senior Lindsay Marvel won 6-3, 6-3 over
Gina Le. Senior Kelly Chan won at the No. 3 spot, 6-2, 7-6 (5), over Ioana
Sisoe and sophomore Alanah Carrol won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 5 singles over Carla
Rocha.
Junior Claudia Arguemdo won her second straight singles match at the No.
6 spot with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Caroline Freeman.
In doubles, the 49ers swept each match for the first time this season.
At No. 1 doubles, Bouffler and Rocha disposed of Sisoe/Tran, 8-2. Carroll/Marvel
won at No. 2 doubles 8-5 over Inapulat/Rocha and at the No. 3 spot Chan
and Emmanuelle Tabatruong won 8-4 over Le/Arias.
The Titans host Cal State Northridge Wednesday afternoon in another Big
West Conference match.
