Five Top Seeds Reach Third Round in Day
One Oct. 10, 2003 – Fullerton, Calif.
Five of the eight top singles seeds advanced to the third round after
day one action at the 2003 Cal State Fullerton Fall Intercollegiate women's
tennis tournament on Friday at the Titan Tennis Courts.
Long Beach State's Tammy Day (No. 2) and Nicole Bouffler (No. 5), Pepperdine's
Eva Dickes (No. 3) and Karin Schlapbach (No. 7) and USC's Bernadette Bayani
(No. 4) each posted victories in their first and second rounds on the
day, and will play in the third round beginning on Saturday (Oct. 11)
at 9 a.m.
Three of the top four doubles seeds also advanced to third round play
as Long Beach State's Day and Bouffler (No. 2), Pepperdine's Dickes and
Schlapbach (No. 3) and UC Irvine's Jayme Hu and Christie Posner (No. 3)
winning their matches.
Cal State Fullerton sophomore Ruya Inapulat -- who was seeded No. 8 in
the tournament -- won her first round match over Long Beach State's Jessica
Boyer in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, but fell in the second round to UCLA's
Nina Yaftali, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.
Senior Ioana Sisoe posted a first round win, 6-1, 6-2, over UCSB's Amanda
Pazornik, but lost in the second round to Long Beach State's Claudia Argumedo,
6-3, 6-3.
Freshman Gina Le opened her Titan career with a straight-set, 6-0, 6-0,
win over Long Beach's Brooke Sutton before falling to UCSB's Mariella
Gruenig, 6-3, 6-4.
In doubles play, the Titan duo of Inapulat and Mai-Ly Tran advanced to
the third round with a pair of victories and are joined in the second
round by the duo of Le and Sisoe.
Doubles play will kick off at 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. Consolation
Singles will begin at 11:30 a.m. with the balance of that bracket to begin
at 8 a.m. on Sunday morning. Consolation doubles will kick off at 2 p.m.
