Titans Struggle on Day One at ITA Tourney Oct. 23, 2003 -- San Diego, Calif.
Cal State Fullerton senior Ioana Sisoe was the only Titan to advance to
the main tournament draw on Thursday at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's
Western Regional Championships at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego,
Calif.
Sisoe, who had a bye in the first round of qualifying action, defeated
Cal State Northridge's Yu Yu Myintton in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, to
advance to the main draw, which begins on Friday morning.
Freshman Mai-Ly Tran lost in the first round of qualifying to Loyola Marymount's
Serena Fermin, 6-0, 6-3. Caroline Freeman fell to San Diego's Lina Baensch,
6-0, 6-2, and Ashley Dunbar fell to Hawaii's Kana Aikawa, 6-1, 6-1.
Freshman Gina Le, who also received a bye in the first qualifying round,
fell to Arizona State's Paulie Fabian, 6-1, 6-2, in the Round of 32.
The doubles team of Sisoe and Le fell to the Matadors' Ana Matijasevic
and Katarzyna Krasinska, 8-4, in the first round. The duo of Freeman and
Dunbar fell to the Matadors' sister duo of Yu Yu and Moe Moe Myintton,
8-1, in the round of 16. Tran and sophomore Ruya Inapulat also fell in
the round of 16 to Northridge's Olga Yepremian and Brittany Bierman, 8-3.
