Five of the tournament's top eight singles seeds advanced to the quarterfinals
after day one of the 2004 Cal State Fullerton Fall Intercollegiate Tennis
Tournament which began on Friday morning at the Titan Tennis Courts on
campus.
Among the group that advanced is Fullerton junior Ruya Inalpulat, who
earned a first-round bye as the No. 8 seed and defeated UC Santa Barbara's
Leslie Damion, 7-6 (5), 6-3, in the second round.
Nicole Arias was also a first-round winner for the Titans, downing UCLA's
Amber Ray in straight sets, 6-0, 6-4. However Arias fell in the second
round to UC Irvine's Jessica Broodfoot, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1.
Sophomore Mai-Ly Tran came out a winner in her first round contest, defeating
Southern Utah's Veronica Cortes, 6-1, 6-2, but fell to Cal State Northridge's
Olga Yepremian, 6-4, 6-3.
Senior Carla Rocha also advanced to the quarterfinals after a first round
bye and a 6-0, 6-1, victory over UC Irvine's Natalie Jacobs.
In doubles play, the duo of Arias and Tran is into the quarters after
defeating pairings from UCI and Cal State Northridge. Doubles play is
scheduled to continue at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
