Cal State Fullerton senior Ioana Sisoe and junior Ruya Inalpulat each
won a pair of qualifying matches on Thursday afternoon to advance to the
main draw of this weekend's ITA West Regional Championships co-hosted
by San Diego State and the University of San Diego.
Inalpulat defeated Arizona's Iza Ferreira, 6-0, 6-1, and Cal State Northridge's
Sonya Kumar, 3-6, 6-0, 10-6, to move into Friday's main draw action.
Sisoe advanced by defeating Northern Arizona's Julie Schmandt, 6-3, 7-6
(3), and Loyola Marymount's Erin Ivey, 1-6, 6-4, 10-6.
Main draw play begins on Friday morning at 9 a.m. as Inalpulat kicks off
Friday's play against Arizona State's Wendy Pilecka while Sisoe takes
on UC Santa Barbara's Marielle Gruenig.
In other action, Mai-Ly Tran (def. Hawaii's Julia Sandborn, 7-5, 7-6),
Caroline Freeman (def. UC Irvine's Lisa Shih, 6-1, 6-3), and Carla Rocha
(def. Hawaii's Paige Minor, 6-2, 6-2) also won first round matches, but
fell one match short of the main draw with second round losses.
Ashley Dunbar was the only singles player who failed to win a first round
match, falling to Arizona's Camelia Todorova, 6-1, 6-1.
All three of the Titans' doubles teams failed to get out of the first
round in the qualifying bracket.
