Sweep by Triple Jumpers Highlights CSF Effort Mar. 8, 2003 Fullerton, Calif.
Triple jumpers Joe Thomas, Cody Jones and Ian Jennings swept the top three
spots to pace the performances by Cal State Fullerton athletes at the
annual Ben Brown Invitational Meet Saturday on the Titan track. Nearly
1,000 athletes competed. For complete results:
Thomas' mark of 51feet, 3 1/2 inches was only one inch shy of his own
school record and all three Titans have posted regional qualifying jumps.
In the women's hammer, Lai Lai Crawford of USC set a stadium record with
a throw of 63.91 meters (209 feet, 8 inches). The old mark was 62.06 meters
by Jenny Foltz (unattached) on Mar. 9, 2001.
Titans' assistant coach Mike Powell failed in his attempt to set a world
record in the long jump for 39 year olds. His best jump was 24 feet, 3
inches, enough to win the competition but well shy of the recognized mark
of 25 feet, 9inches. He owns the current overall world record with a jump
of 29 feet, 4 1/2 inches set in 1991 in Tokyo, Japan, at the World Championshps.
Fullerton's Giovanni Lanaro lost the pole vault competition to David Grajalva
(unattached), who cleared 5.35 meters (17 feet, 6 inches) to 5.20 (17
feet) by Lanaro. Lanaro has the No. 1 outdoor mark in the United States
and No. 10 in the world this year at 17 feet, 6 1/2 inches.
