Vaulters Soar to Record Heights at Occidental May 10, 2003 Los Angeles, CA
Giovanni Lanaro broke the 18-foot barrier for another school men's pole
vault record and Jennifer Clarke matched her week-old school standard
in the women's event Saturday to pace Cal State Fullerton's efforts at
the Occidental Invitational.
Lanaro cleared 18 feet, one-half inch (5.50 meters) to better his school
record of 17-9 and win the event by more than a foot over California's
Michael Landers at 16-6 3/4. Fullerton's Nobuhiro Funatsu was third at
15-7 1/4. Lanaro's mark set a meet record (old: 5.35 by Long Beach State's
Borya Celentano) and was a stadium record as well. His height ties him
for third nationally.
Clarke tied for second with UC Irvine's Erin Curtis behind Melissa Astete
of USC, who cleared 12 - 8 3/4.
The Titans also did well in the men's 4x100 relay, winning in a time of
40.73 ahead of UCLA at 40.75. Kelly Figueira jumped 18-10 in the long
jump to finish third and match her seaon's best. Chris Covert (1:54.43)
and Nick Arcianaga (1:55.55) ran season bests in the 800.
At the 2003 Modesto Relays, Mychael Westervelt triple jumped a new lifetime
best at 39 feet, 2 inches, which is good enough to place her third on
the CSUF all-time list.
The Titans compete in the Big West Conference Championship Meet this weekend
at Cal State Northridge.
