Sophomore Jennifer Clarke set a school record and juniors Lakeysha McClenton
and Mychael Westervelt also won their best events Saturday at the Steve
Scott Invitational at UC Irvine.
Clarke tied with Deborah Samson of UCSB at 12 feet, 6 inches in the pole
vault to set a personal best and top the old mark of 12-3 1/2 by Tricia
Gutierez in 2000. Westervelt jumped 38 feet, 4 3/4 inches to win the triple
jump by a little more than an inch over San Diego State's Hollann Givens.
McClenton ran 2:10.66 to win the fastest section of the 800 meters. She
beat Cal State Dominguez' Sherron Rhetta by two-tenths of a second.
Other top Titan finishers were Nick Arciniaga, second in his section of
the 1500 in 3:57.11; Vik Mahan, third in his section of the 1500 in 4:06.21;
Danny Keener, third in the men's steeplechase in 9:33.01; Nobuhiro Funatsu,
second in the pole vault at 16 feet, 3/4 inch; Chris Coffey, second in
the men's long jump at 22 feet, 8 inches; Ian Jennings, third in the triple
jump at 50 feet, 6 3/4 inches; and Orenda Talton, third in the fastest
section of the 200 in 24.67.
