Lanaro Invited to Mexican National Camp June 24, 2003 Fullerton, CA
Giovanni Lanaro, who has dual citizenship in the United States and Mexico,
has been invited to try out for the Mexican national team this summer.
Acceptance to this team could earn Lanaro a spot on Mexico's delegation
to the Pan-American Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, and the
World Championship team, which is held in Paris, France, this August.
In other Titan track and field news:
Freshman Lacey Welborn qualified for the USATF Jr. Nationals at Stanford
University on June 19-22. She competed in the heptathlon and placed
12th with a score of 4,099 points, well off her school record of 4,508.
The top two finishers in each event received invitations to represent
the United States National Team later this summer in the Jr. Pan-American
Games, held in Barbados.
Earlier this month, five Titans competed in the NCAA Outdoor Championships
in Sacramento.
"For the men's 4x100 relay team of Emanuel Marshall, Fred Williams,
David Ortega, and Aaron Williams, it was an awesome experience,"
said Assistant Coach Ron Kamaka. "They ended with a season best time
of 40.28. The team also made history as the first CSF sprint team
to ever advance to the NCAA Div. I Championships. Such an experience
will only inspire future teams to make similar strides towards advancing
deeper into the championship meet."
In the men's pole vault, Big West Conference champion Giovanni Lanaro
advanced to the finals with 14 others. In the final, Giovanni jumped
a season low of 16 feet, 10 3/4 inches, which was good enough for a share
of eighth place and his second All-American honor this season. Like
the men's relay team, the Titan vaulter also made history, becoming the
first pole vaulter to advance to an outdoor championship.
