Female Vaulters Soar, Cearley Shines in 400H May 14, 2005 Irvine, CA
Senior Jennifer Clarke and freshman Dalya Taman placed one-two in the
women's pole vault and Destany Cearley qualified for NCAA Regionals with
a school-record time in the 400 intermediate hurdles Saturday to top Cal
State Fullerton's efforts in the 2005 Big West Conference Track &
Feild Championships at UC Irvine.
Fullerton place eighth among nine school in women's competition while
the men were ninth in a nine-team reace.
The Titans' women scored 18 of their 32 points
in the vault with Clarke winning at 12 feet, 5 1/2 inches to qualify for
NCAA regionals and Taman placing at 11 feet, 11 3/4 inches. Cearley ran
60.59 to place third and make the NCAA regional standard of 60.82. The
old CSF record of 60.70 was set by Julie Fricke in 1986.
On the men's side, Fullerton scored only 23 points. The best finish came
in the high jump where freshmen Matt Turner and Jonathan Golden placed
second and fourth, respectively. Turner cleared 6 feet, 11 3/4 inches
to score 8 points. Golden was fourth at 6 feet, 10 3/4, for 3 points.
The men's only other point on Saturday came in the 5000 meter run where
Jordan Horn ran 14:49.40 to finish eighth.
On Friday, Kurt Weber soared more than a foot better
than his previous best effort this season to place third in the long jump.
He was measured at 24 feet, 8 inches to gain an NCAA regional berth.
Other women to score points were Christine Ruby, 7th in the women's 800;
and the 4x100 (Kelly Figueira, Terri Anderson, LaTangia Oliver and Lacey
Welborn) and 4x400 relay teams, which placed fourth and eighth, respectively.
Cal State Northridge repeated as men's team champions, placing ahead of
runnerup Cal Poly. UC Santa Barbara won its first team title on the women's
side, outscoring runnerup Cal State Northridge.
