Fred Williams Hired as Assistant Coach July 2, 2002 Fullerton, Calif.
Former USC head coach Fred Williams has been appointed an assistant to
Cal State Fullerton women's basketball Coach Barbara Ehardt.
Williams, 45, coached the Trojans into the second round of the NCAA Tournament
in 1997 and finished with a 20-9 record. USC was 14-14 in 1995-96, the
first season of his two-year tenure. He replaces John Bartleson, who resigned
to take a position with the reincarnated program at Utah State.
"I'm thrilled and honored to have someone of Fred's caliber and background
join our staff," said Ehardt. "Without a doubt, he will be a
huge asset both on and off the court. There aren't many assistants in
Division I basketball with his background and wealth of knowledge."
Since coaching at USC, Williams has been involved with professional basketball
as an assistant and later head coach of the Utah Starzz of the WNBA and
more recently as an advance scout for the Utah Jazz of the NBA. He also
has been active in the music industry and was an independent basketball
consultant to FW Sports.
Williams had two tenures as an assistant coach at USC, first from 1983
to 1991, and again as associate head coach to Cheryl Miller for the 1993-95
seasons. In between those time periods he was an assistant at UC Irvine.
Williams prepped at Inglewood High School and obtained his bachelor's
degree at Boise State.
