Nebraska Shuts Down Cal State Fullerton, 89-55
Dec. 29, 2001 – Fullerton, Calif.

Box Score

The visiting University of Nebraska posted five players in double figures -- four of those starters -- while hitting on 46 percent of its shots as the Cornhuskers ran away from host Cal State Fullerton, 89-55, in a non-conference women’s basketball game on Saturday night in front of a season-high 429 fans at Titan Gym.

The Titans fell to 2-8 overall and have lost their last three consecutive games. The Cornhuskers improved to 10-3 overall on the season.

Fullerton was led by sophomore center Rochelle Ortega, who had 14 points, five rebounds, and two blocks on the night to pace the Titans as the lone player in double figures. Freshman guard Meghann Keathley added a career-high eight points on the night in 23 minutes of play while junior Jennielee Greslie had seven points and four rebounds.

For Ortega, it was her sixth double-digit scoring performance of the season and her third in the last four games. She leads the team in that category this season.
Nebraska was led by forward Katie Robinette, who notched a game-high 20 points on the night to go with nine rebounds on 8-of-14 shooting and led four other Cornhusker players in double digits.

Guard Margaret Richards came off the bench to add 13 points and six rebounds in just 19 minutes of play, forward Steph Jones added 12 points and eight rebounds while Alexa Johnson and Shannon Howell added 10 points apiece.

The Titans were hampered by poor shooting, hitting only 20-of-66 (.303) from the floor, including a dismal 9-of-37 (.243) in the first half. Fullerton rebounded by hitting on 38 percent of its shots in the second half, but were unable to battle back from a 22-point deficit at the break. In contrast, Nebraska shot 46 percent from the floor (34-of-74), hitting on 17-of-37 from the field in both halves.

The Cornhuskers also held a 56-41 advantage on the boards and capitalized on 18 Titan turnovers on the night.

Fullerton hung close with Nebraska in the opening minutes of the contest, three times coming to within two points. However, the Cornhusker offense was too much, using a 12-2 run with just under 14 minutes left in the first half to build a 12-point lead and never look back. In the second half, the Titans never got closer than 21 points at the 16:58 mark with the score, 50-29.

The Titans return to action on Monday (Dec. 31) as they ring in the new year with an afternoon tilt against Missouri-Kansas City. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Titan Gym.
