Cal Poly freshman guards Courtney Uphoff and Jennifer Dooley both made
four three-pointers -- Uphoff finishing with 26 points and Dooley adding
12 -- as Cal Poly defeated Cal State Fullerton, 82-70 in the regular season
finale for both teams on Saturday night at Mott Gym in San Luis Obispo,
Calif.
The Mustangs finished the year 10-16 overall and 6-10 in conference games
to clinch sixth place in next week's Big West Conference Tournament. The
Titans finished 7-20 overall and 5-11 in the Big West for eighth place.
The Mustangs will face third-seeded Long Beach State (13-14, 10-6 BWC)
at noon while the Titans will take on top-seeded UC Santa Barbara at 6
p.m. It is the third consecutive year that Cal State Fullerton will meet
the Gauchos in the first round of the conference tournament.
Senior forward Heather Journey and senior point guard Kari Duperron each
scored 10 points for Cal Poly. Guard Megan Turner, the third Mustang senior,
was held scoreless.
Uphoff made seven of 12 floor shots, including four of six three-pointers,
and all eight of her free throws, shattering her career high of 14 set
against Idaho and UC Santa Barbara earlier this season. Dooley was 4-for-4
from three-point range.
Fullerton was led by senior forward Heather Hansen, who notched her second
double-double of the year with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Junior center
Rochelle Ortega added 12 points and senior forward Allyson Alhadeff notched
10 points off the bench for the Titans.
Cal State Fullerton went on a 9-2 run for a 13-9 lead with 12:39 left
in the first half and led by as many as six points before Cal Poly ended
the first half with a 12-3 run and a 42-34 lead at the break.
The Mustangs opened up several 14-point leads early in the second half
and led by as many as 19 points late in the game. Cal State Fullerton
never got any closer than eight points in the second half.
Cal Poly made 45 percent of its floor shots, including nine of 14 three-pointers
for a season high 64.3 percent. Cal State Fullerton made 43 percent from
the floor. The Mustangs outrebounded the Titans 40-35, led by Journey
with eight.
