UC Irvine Runs Away from Fullerton, 72-43

UC Irvine had three players in double figures and closed out the game with a 22-7 run en route to a, 72-43, Big West Conference women's basketball victory on Thursday night at the Bren Center in Irvine.

Cal State Fullerton falls to 3-10 overall, 1-2 in the Big West. UC Irvine improved to 8-5 overall, 1-1 in league action.

The 29-point victory by the Anteaters was the fourth-largest in the history of the 44-game history between the two schools.

After trailing by five points midway through the first period, the Titans rang off nine consecutive points to take their first lead of the game at 15-11 with just over 10 minutes remaining. Freshman Amber Pruitt had five of those points during the run, including her first career three-pointer from the top of the key.

After the two teams traded baskets for the next five minutes, Cal State Fullerton built another five-point advantage at 21-16, but that would be the last time the Titans held the lead. UC Irvine closed out the half with a 17-3 run, erasing Fullerton's lead and giving the Anteaters a 33-24 lead at the break.

The Titans came out firing in the second half, scoring the first two buckets to cut the lead to just five points, but the long-range shooting of UC Irvine kept the Titans at bay. The Anteaters promptly went on an 11-0 run to up the lead to 43-28 and they never looked back.

Irvine led by as many 36 points late in the game and broke things wide open in the second half, opening the lead thanks to 22 unanswered points and holding the Titan offense scoreless for a span of 11:23.

A large part of UCI's offense came via the three-pointer as the Anteaters sank just under 41 percent of their shots from long range.

Fullerton was led off the bench by junior Tamara Quinn, who had 13 points. Junior Rochelle Ortega added 10 points, five boards and two blocks. Senior Heather Hansen, who had scored in double figures in seven of her first eight contests, was held to under five points for the third time in the last four contests.

On a more positive note for Hansen, the Norco, Calif., native had three blocks in the game to give her 57 for her career, moving her into a tie with Kisa Hughes for fourth on the all-time list. Dee Braxton is in third with 65 blocked shots.

UCI was led by Kristen Green, who had 17 points and eight boards to go with four steals. Lisa Faulkner added 14 points in the win, while Christina Callaway had a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds.

The Anteaters outrebounded the Titans, 52-41, while shooting .375 from the field (including .485 in the second half) while holding Fullerton to .308 shooting from the floor for the game. Cal State Fullerton committed 21 turnovers for the game whilch led to 23 Irvine points.

Cal State Fullerton next takes the court on Saturday evening (Jan. 11) at 5 p.m. as the Titans travel to Las Vegas to take on UNLV. Live game audio can be heard over the Internet at www.unlvrebels.com.
