Win OT Thriller Against Cal Poly, 84-76 Jan. 2, 2003 – Fullerton, Calif. Box Score Fullerton, Calif. – Host Cal State Fullerton rang in 2003 in thrilling fashion, as freshman guard Andrea Adams sank the tying basket with four seconds remaining in regulation and the Titans outscored visiting Cal Poly 12-4 in overtime en route to an, 84-76, victory in the Big West Conference women’s basketball season opener for both teams on Thursday night at Titan Gym. With the win, Cal State Fullerton improved to 3-8 overall and 1-0 in conference play. The victory for the Titans snapped a six-game losing streak to the Mustangs in the series (which the Titans’ lead 17-8) and improved Fullerton’s record to 4-1 in its last five overtime games. It is just the fifth win in a Big West opener for the Titans in 18 tries and the first since 1997-98 after losing their last four straight conference openers. Cal Poly fell to 4-7 overall and 0-1 in the Big West. After trailing by as many as five points in the second half, the Titans went cold from the field, going scoreless for a stretch of 3:42 midway through the period. A three-pointer by junior Tamara Quinn and a basket by senior Heather Hansen brought the Titans even at 53-53 with 8:21 remaining in the contest. Both teams traded baskets for the next 2:22 before a lay-up inside by sophomore Catherine Holman gave Fullerton its first lead since the 11:53 mark of the first half. The Titans led by two points at 65-63 with 2:49 to go, but the Mustangs hit 4-of-4 from the free throw line to take a two-point lead with 2:10 remaining. A pair of free throws by Adams with 1:19 remaining tied the game at 69-69, but Cal Poly took the advantage by hitting 3-of-6 from the line compared to Fullerton’s 1-of-4 to build a two-point lead with 20 seconds left on the clock. That set the stage for Adams’ last second heroics as she faked the pass to the wing and drove right up the middle, banking her shot off the top of the square and in to knot the game at 72-72 as regulation ended. In overtime, Cal Poly took the quick one-point lead on 1-of-2 from the line by Lacy Tannenberg, but the Titans responded with a jumpshot from the left corner by senior Allyson Alhadeff to take a 73-72 lead and Fullerton never looked back. Freshman Amber Pruitt scored the next four points for the Titans, building a five-point lead, but Tannenberg brought the Mustangs back, hitting a lay-up and the ensuing free throw after the foul to cut the lead to two points at 78-76 with 2:20 remaining. A lay-up by Audrey Taylor upped Fullerton’s advantage to four points just six seconds later and the Titans hit on 4-of-8 from the line to ice the game. Cal State Fullerton had four players in double-figures led by Adams’ career-high 19 points to go with seven assists. Hansen had 18 points and nine boards before fouling out with 2:35 remaining in regulation. Taylor notched a career-high 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting and Holman tied a season-high with 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the floor. Cal Poly was led by Kari Duperron, who had a game-high 21 points and four steals. She was joined in double figures by Heather Journey, who had 14 points and five boards, and Tannenberg, who added 13 points. The Titans shot a season-high 53.8 percent from the floor compared to the Mustangs’ 38 percent. Both teams were even on the boards with 39 rebounds apiece. The 84 points for Fullerton was a new season-high, eclipsing the 77 scored at Southern Utah on Dec. 7. It is the first time the Titans have scored 80 points this season and the first since scoring 86 points in a win over San Jose State on Jan. 2, 2000. Cal State Fullerton returns to action on Saturday night (Jan. 4) as the Titans take on the defending Big West Conference champions, No. 22 UC Santa Barbara at 7 p.m. at Titan Gym. ####
