Gonzaga Downs Titans, 75-57 Dec. 31, 2002 Fullerton, Calif. Box Score Gonzaga shot just under 53 percent from the field for the game and had four players in double figures on Tuesday afternoon as the visiting Bulldogs handed host Cal State Fullerton a 75-57 defeat in a non-conference womens basketball game at Titan Gym. The Titans fell to 2-8 overall with the loss heading into Thursdays Big West Conference opener. The Bulldogs improved to 7-5, winning six of their last seven. Cal State Fullerton was led by junior center Rochelle Ortega, who had 12 points and six rebounds in 24 minutes. Junior Tamara Quinn and junior Nikki Lee added 10 points each. The Titans leading scorer, senior Heather Hansen, was held to just five points and five rebounds, snapping a streak of seven consecutive double-digit performances. Gonzaga was led by Raeanna Jewell, who was a perfect 7-for-7 from the field and 4-for-4 from three-point range in scoring her game-high 19 points. Shannon Matthews also added 19 points on 6-of-10 shooting and five three pointers. Delphine Lecoultre and Anne Bailey added 12 and 10 points, respectively. The Titans scored the first basket of the game, a three-pointer by senior Allyson Alhadeff, but that was the last time Fullerton held the lead. An 11-2 run by Gonzaga gave the Bulldogs the 11-5 advantage and they never looked back. Gonzaga pushed the lead to as many as 21 points in the closing minute of the first half and led by that margin, 48-27, at the break. Cal State Fullerton whittled the lead down to 12 points on three different occassions in the second half, but that was as close as the Titans would come. Fullerton shot a season-low 30.8 percent from the field for the game and tied a season-low with 16 field goals made on the afternoon. The Titans did hit at the free throw line, making 21-of-26 (.808) for the second-highest percentage of the year. For comparison, Gonzaga was 30-for-57 (.526) from the field and 10-of-18 (.556) from three-point range. The Titans return to action on Thursday evening (Jan. 2) as they open Big West Conference play at home against Cal Poly at 7 p.m. Cal State Fullerton then hosts defending league champion No. 22 UC Santa Barbara on Saturday (Jan. 4) also at 7 p.m. ####
