Senior Associate Athletics Director Dr. Maryalyce Jeremiah today relinquished
her position at Cal State Fullerton to sign a three-year contract to again
coach the Titans womens basketball team, which she previously
guided during the 1985-86 through 1991-92 seasons.
I am excited and extremely proud to get back to what I professionally
love to do the most, said Jeremiah. Because of my involvement
at the national level throughout the past years, I believe I bring to
the Titan program what it needs -- an understanding of the game, a sincere
love for the athletes and an intense desire and drive to win.
I am grateful to the University for its confidence in me and
my goal will be to bring this program back into a competitive position
in the Big West Conference so that the young women who wear the Titan
uniform will experience the NCAA tournament. This team is the one that
I want to coach. They are excellent students who are eager to learn,
willing to work and hungry to win. With their youth and my experience,
I believe the future is bright for the Titans.
Im very pleased and excited to have one of the finest womens
basketball coaches in the country at our institution, said Director
of Athletics Brian Quinn. Maryalyce has been a marvelous administrator
and has done great things to assure gender equity and fairness for female
student-athletes on campus. We will greatly miss her as an administrator,
but will know that our womens basketball program is going to rise
again under her great leadership.
Jeremiah took the Titans to a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances (1989
and 1991) with All-American center Genia Miller and compiled a seven-year
record of 112-93 (.546). In the ensuing 11 seasons, the Titans have gone
72-228 (.240) under Coaches Debbie Ayres (44-92), Denise Curry (16-64)
and Barbara Ehardt (12-72) with no winning seasons. The Titans were 7-21
in 2002-03 and Ehardts contract was not renewed.
Jeremiahs administrative career began in 1991-92 when she served
as Fullertons interim senior woman administrator while coaching
her final season. She served as chairperson of the NCAA Div. I Womens
Basketball Committee for the 2000-01 and 2001-02 seasons after serving
on the committee the previous two years. She is a member of the Big West
Conference Athletics Council and serves on Cal State Fullertons
Academic Senate executive committee and university planning committee.
Her head coaching career began in 1970 at her alma mater, Cedarville College
in Ohio. After nine seasons (104-75) she moved to Dayton for two spectacular
seasons (69-5) and then spent six years at Indiana (90-63) before moving
to Fullerton. Her 23-year career record is 375-236 (.614).
Among the many honors Jeremiah has won is the Carol Eckman Award in 1990,
presented annually by the Womens Basketball Coaches Association
to the coach who best represents sportsmanship and ethics in the coaching
profession. She was selected Big West Conference and District 8 Coach
of the Year after her 25-8 season in 1990-91. She was Big Ten and District
5 Coach of the Year in 1983. At Dayton she led the Flyers to the AIAW
Div. II national championship in 1980.
Jeremiah earned a second undergraduate degree from Central State (Ohio)
in 1965 and a masters in 1967 and a doctorate in 1973 from Ohio State.
