Alabama State shot 50 percent in the second half and overcame a nine-point
halftime deficit on Sunday morning to hand Cal State Fullerton a 65-63
loss in the consolation game of the Holiday Inn Jayhawk Classic in Lawrence,
Kan.
The Titans lost their eighth consecutive game dating back to the 2002-03
season, falling to 0-5 overall this season. The Hornets, NCAA Tournament
qualifiers last year, improved to 2-1 overall.
Senior center Rochelle Ortega notched her first double-double of the season
with 12 points and 11 rebounds, pacing three Titans in double figures.
Sophomore Amber Pruitt had her fourth double-digit scoring performance
in five games this season, tallying 10 points and five rebounds. Senior
Tamara Quinn added 12 points, six rebounds and five assists.
Alabama State was led by center Crystal Kitt, who scored a game-high 26
points on 9-of-12 shooting from the floor and 8-of-10 from the free throw
line. She also added 10 rebounds in the victory. Catrina Pincher notched
18 points on 7-of-17 shooting, including four three-pointers.
Cal State Fullerton led 34-29 at the break, largely thanks to the cold-shooting
Hornets, who hit just 8-of-32 (.250) from the field compared to the Titans'
.345. However, Alabama State caught fire in the second half, outscoring
Fullerton 40-29 in the period and hitting 15-of-30 (.500) from the field.
Both teams tallied 41 rebounds for the game.
Fullerton returns to action on Tuesday (Dec. 9) as the Titans host Brigham
Young in a non-conference game at 7 p.m. at Titan Gym.
