Underwood, Quinn Pace Titans to Road Win

Charlee Underwood and Tamara Quinn scored a combined 35 points to lead Cal State Fullerton past UC Irvine, 59-50 Thursday at the Bren Events Center.

Underwood led the Titans (6-14, 6-5) with 18 points followed by Quinn’s 17 points. Underwood was 8-15 from the field, while Quinn was 6-13, including 4-7 from three-point range. Amber Pruitt added 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds.

Cal State Fullerton hit three consecutive three-pointers with the last coming by Underwood at the 16:14 mark of the first half to give the Titans a three-point lead at 11-8. Cal State Fullerton would never relinquish the lead after that point, building an 11-point (34-23) lead at the half.

UCI came out of the intermission on a 7-0 run to close within four (30-34), but that is as close as they would come as the Titans would go on a 10-3 spurt, including six points from Underwood, to extend the lead back to 11 (44-33) with 13:05 remaining.

UCI’s Christina Callaway had a game-high 19 points and a team-high six rebounds. Lauren Yadon came off the bench to add 12 points and four rebounds in the loss. UCI’s leading scorer Kristen Green was 1-10 from the field, recording just two points. With the loss, UCI falls to 4-16 overall and 3-9 in Big West Conference play.

UCI out-shot the Titans 47.7 – 40.4, but Cal State Fullerton had a 32-30 advantage in rebounding. The Anteaters were held to a season low 1-6 (16.7) shooting from three-point range, while Cal State Fullerton poured in eight from long range.

The Titans play at Long Beach State on Saturday night.
