The University of New Mexico women's basketball team improved to 2-0 on
the season with a close 59-52 victory of The Titans of Cal State Fullerton
(0-2). Junior Mandi Moore led the Lobos with 13 points, eight rebounds
and dished out six assists. Junior Lindsey Arndt also chipped in 12 points.
The Titans jumped out to a quick 9-2 lead in the first 2:30 minutes of
the game, before Lobo freshman Katie Montgomery nailed a 3-pointer to
tie it at 11. UNM junior Jenny Shetters put the Lobos on top for good
with a under-handed lay up at the 9:10 mark of the first half. Although
the Lobos shot a dismal 35.1 percent from the field during the first half,
they managed to head into intermission with a 34-27 lead.
Fullerton started the second half in the same way it began the game, bringing
the Lobos to within three points at the 16:23 mark. Mandi Moore dropped
two buckets in a row extending the Lobo lead to 43-34, the Titans would
use timeouts and mini runs to eventually close the gap to six but UNM
would hit a couple of shots down the stretch to hold on for the victory.
Cal State Fullerton sophomore Amber Pruitt collected a double-double in
the losing effort, scoring 14 points and grabbing 10 boards.
The Titans shot .367 from the floor (The Lobos shot .351), but were outrebounded
47-39 for the game.
