Cal State Fullerton junior forward Amber Pruitt had 18 points and led
two other Titans in double figures, but it wasn’t enough as the
Love and Basketball AAU squad defeated host Fullerton, 78-57, in a women’s
basketball exhibition on Saturday afternoon at Titan Gym.
Sophomore Charlee Underwood and freshman Mariama Wrighster joined Pruitt
in double figures with 13 and 10 points, respectively, while Underwood
had a game-high nine rebounds.
Love and Basketball was led by former Loyola Marymount standout Bryn Britton,
who had a team-high 15 points on 6-of-13 shooting. She led four other
players in double figures as Monique Whitfield (14 points), Denise Woods
(13), Mary Apiafi (12), and Jessica Cheeks (12) also helped drive the
offense.
Cal State Fullerton was held scoreless for the first five minutes of the
first half until a short jumper by Pruitt broke the drought after Love
and Basketball jumped out to a 15-0 lead. The Titans closed to within
eight points halfway through the period thanks to an 8-3 run, but an 11-1
run by Love and Basketball ballooned the lead to 20 points and they went
on from there.
Fullerton chipped away at the lead in the second half, closing to within
13 points on four different occassions, but the Titans were hampered by
poor shooting, hitting only 27 percent of their shots for the game, including
19 percent in the first half. Conversely, Love and Basketball hit 43 percent
from the floor, including 47 percent in the second half.
Cal State Fullerton opens the 2004-05 regular season on Nov. 19 as one
of four teams at the John Ascuaga’s Nugget Classic in Reno, Nev.
The Titans will meet host Nevada in the opener and will face either Colorado
or Loyola Marymount in the second game of the tournament on Nov. 20.
