Three Titans
Still Alive at Pac-10 Championships Mar. 2, 2002 Corvallis, OR Chris Carlino, Rowdy Lundegren and Leo Sanchez still are alive for Cal State Fullerton at the 2002 Pac-10 Championships at Oregon State. Carlino decisioned John Garfinkel of Stanford, 8-3, to advance to the semifinals at 165 pounds but was beaten by No. 2 seeded Burt Pierson of UC Davis, 5-3, and he now faces No. 4-seeded Brody Barrios of Cal Poly in the wrestleback semifinals. Lundegren, who just joined the Titans squad a few weeks ago, upset No. 4 seeded Tony D'Amico of Boise State, 8-2, but lost to No. 1 seed Jeremy Wilson of Portland State, 5-2. In the wrestleback semifinals he now faces Will Carr of Arizona State. Leo Sanchez at 157 had to win two matches to gain the wrestleback semifinals. He won a "pigtail" over Eric Arbogast of Portland State, 11-5, but was beaten in the quarterfinals by Levi Weikel-Magden of Stanford, 7-3. Sanchez bounced back to pin Micah Houston of Oregon State in 51 seconds and he now faces Mitch Morgan of Boise State. For the Titans, Robert Valenzuela at 125, David Rodriguez at 133, Juan Mora at 141, Jeff Silva at 149, Shawn Henebry at 174 and Edgar Hernandez at 197 all have been eliminated with two losses. Rodriguez, Mora and Hernandez each managed one win. The top four wrestlers at each weight plus three "wild cards" qualify for the NCAA championships Mar. 21-23 at Albany, NY.
