Qualify for NCAA Finals Mar. 4, 2003 Boise, ID
Four Titans have qualified for the NCAA
wrestling championships by virtue of their performances over the weekend
at the Pac-10 championships at Boise State, where Cal State Fullerton
finished in eighth place, two notches better than a year ago.
Juan Mora, Chris Carlino and Landon Seefeldt each placed fourth at their
respective weight classes to earn automatic berths. Rowdy Lundegreen placed
fifth and was selected as one of two wild cards by the Pac-10 coaches
to return to the NCAA finals where he upset the No. 1 seed in the first
round last year.
Mora placed fourth at 141 pounds, beating Chris Brines of UC Davis, 14-4,
before losing to No. 3-seed Casey Hunt of Oregon, 13-10.
Carlino placed fourth at 174 pounds, beating Harold Penson of Stanford
on a technical fall before losing to No. 3-seeded Jake Huffman of Oregon
State, 8-3.
Seefeldt placed fourth at 197 pounds, beating Jason Lovell of Oregon State,
3-1, before losing to No. 3-seeded David Schenk of Cal Poly, 3-2.
Lundegreen took fifth place at 184 pounds, losing to Tony D'Amico of Boise
State, 3-2, before beating John Garfinkel of Stanford, 5-0.
Arizona State won four individual championships and captured the team
title with 134 points to 127 for host Boise State, the defending champion,
which held a slim lead going into the finals. Oregon State (93.5) was
third followed by Cal Poly SLO (73.5), Oregon (68), Cal State Bakersfield
(66.5), UC Davis (46.5), Fullerton (44.5), Stanford (37.5) and Portland
State (31.5).
The NCAA finals are in Kansas City, Missouri, and begin on Mar. 20.
