The Stanford wrestling team put on a display for past Cardinal greats,
beating Cal State Fullerton, 24-9, on the eve of wrestling reunion weekend.
The Cardinal won seven of 10 bouts. The victory was Stanford's third dual
meet victory in a row, and brings the team's current record to 6-4, 3-2
Pac-10 while Fullerton fell to 4-11, 2-5.
The dual began at 133 pounds, where senior Paul Gross jumped out to an
early lead and never looked back, throttling Fullerton's Alvaro Arreola
for an 11-0 major decision. The two matches to follow would prove to be
conditioning marathons as Stanford's Brad Metzler and Fullerton's Juan
Mora would need two overtime periods to determine a winner. In a battle
of wills, Mora finally won out by a 3-1 margin. At 149 pounds, much of
the same battle of wills transpired as Stanford's Luis Vendrell (ranked
4th in Pac-10) and Fullerton's Brett Gordon (3rd in Pac-10) also needed
a second sudden victory period to determine a winner, with Vendrell securing
a late takedown, the match, and some Cardinal momentum to put the Cardinal
up by a 7-3 team score.
Fullerton's other wins came from Ian Murphy at 184 pounds and Landon Seefeldt
at 197.
