Michigan Storms Back to Defeat Titans, 31-15 Jan.

No. 6 Michigan won four of the final five matches on the night, two
of those coming via pinfall, to come from behind and defeat Cal State
Fullerton, 31-15, on Monday night at El Modena HS in Orange, Calif.
The Titans fell to 0-7 overall in dual meets on the season while MIchigan
improved to 6-1 overall.
Decisions by the Titans’ Landon Seefeldt (3-2) and Jesse Miramontes
(9-4) sandwiched a pin by Michgan’s Greg Wagner to knot the score
at 6-6 only three bouts into the match. The Wolverines took an 11-6 lead
with Foley Dowd scored a technical fall, thanks to riding time, over Fullerton’s
Chris Sanchez to give Michigan the 11-6 advantage.
However, junior Juan Mora brought the Titans storming back, pinning Michigan’s
Clark Forward just 26 seconds into the third period after trailing on
the scoreboard, 6-5, giving Fullerton six team points and a 12-11 lead.
That advantage was short-lived, however, as pins by Jeremiah Tobias and
Pat Owen along with a major decision for Ryan Bertin gave the Wolverines
a commanding 27-12 lead they would never relinquish.
Junior Leonel Sanchez held on for a 4-3 decision at 174 pounds for the
Titans’ final points of the match, while Michigan’s Joshua Weitzel
scored a major decision, 10-1, over Fullerton’s Ian Murphy in the
night’s final bout for the final margin.
Cal State Fullerton returns to action on Friday (Jan. 9) as one of four
teams at the Oregon Duals in Redmond, Ore., where the Titans will face
Pacific-10 Conference rivals Oregon, Oregon State and Portland State.
