Cal State Fullerton's Jesse Miramontes will face No. 1-seeded Tommy
Schurkamp of UC Davis Monday in the championship bout of the 125-pound
bracket at the 2004 Pac-10 Wrestling Championships at Arizona State.
Fullerton is in sixth place after the first day of competition with seven
wrestlers still alive. No Titan has yet to lose to a lower seeded competitor.
Boise State is the early standings leader followed by Stanford, Arizona
State, Cal Poly and Cal State Bakersfield.
No. 6-seed Miramontes pinned two higher seeded wrestlers to gain the finals.
He pinned No. 3-seed Vic Moreno of Cal Poly in only 28 seconds in the
quarterfinals and then got a fall against No. 2-seeded Efren Ceballos
of Cal State Bakersfield in 2:40 of the semifinals. It was Miramontes
second win in three weeks over Ceballos, the nation's winningest 125-pounder.
Six other Titan wrestlers are alive in the consolation bracket needing
two wins on Monday to finish in third place and claim a berth in the NCAA
Championship Tournament.
At 141 pounds, No. 3-seeded Juan Mora beat Kyle Larson of Oregon State,
13-3, before losing to No. 2-seeded Jesse Brock of Boise State, 12-4.
Mora will next face No. 5-seeded Roberto Vargas of Cal State Bakersfield.
At 149, unseeded Brett Gordon won two bouts on Sunday before falling to
top-seeded Patrick Williams of ASU, 7-3. Gordon beat No. 4-seeded Eddie
Dahlen of Portland State, 4-1, and No. 5-seed Lewis Vendrell of Stanford,
8-2.
At 157, No. 6-seeded Dustin Vance lost to No. 3-seed Brian Cobb of Cal
State Bakersfield, 10-5, but won by forfeit over Orlando Perez of Oregon
State.
At 174, No. 4-seeded Leonel Sanchez beat Frank Richmond of UC Davis, 9-5,
before losing to No. 1-seeded Jed Pennell of Oregon State, 5-2.
At 184, No. 6-seeded Ian Murphy lost to No. 3-seeded Nick Frost of Arizona
State, 20-4, but then pinned Nick Gomeza of Portland State in 5:48.
At 197, No. 5-seeded Landon Seefeldt beat Larry Ozowara of Stanford, 8-2,
before losing to No. 1-seeded Ryan Bader of ASU.
Risto Marttinen was eliminated at 165 but not after two narrow losses.
He was decisioned by No. 1-seeded Matt Ellis of Oregon State, 3-1, and
pinned Erik Shortenhaus of Cal Poly in 4:58 before losing to Russell Brunson
of Boise State, 10-9.
Chris Sanchez at 133 and Matthew Fitu at heavyweight each went 0-2.
The top three wrestlers at each weight qualify for
nationals and 11 additional at-large selections also will receive berths.
Competition resumes at 11 a.m. MST on Monday.
