Home Season Concludes with Pair of Matches Feb. 5, 2004 -- Fullerton, Calif.
Cal State Fullerton will conclude the home portion of its 2003-04
wrestling schedule Friday night when the Titans host Cal State Bakersfield
and Menlo College in Titan Gym at 5 and 7 p.m.
Seniors Brett Gordon (149 pounds) and Dustin Vance (157) will be making
the final appearances of their two-season Titan careers.
Fullerton is 4-11 overall and 2-5 in Pac-10 competition and Bakersfield
is the final Pac-10 dual match of the season. The Roadrunners are ranked
No. 22 in the nation by the NWCA and come in with an 11-1 dual match record
and 6-1 Pac-10 mark. All 10 of the regular Bakersfield wrestlers are ranked
in the current Pac-10 seedings while the Titans have only six in that
category.
Leading the way for CSUB is 125-pounder Efren Ceballos, ranked No. 1 in
the Pac-10 and as high as No. 5 in the nation. Also impressive are 197-pounder
Matt Monteiro and 165-pounder Christian Arellano, who are both ranked
No. 2 in the Pac-10. Monteiro is as high as No. 4 in the nation.
Fullerton's top Pac-10 ranked competitor is 174-pound Leo Sanchez, who
is No. 3. Landon Seefeldt is No. 4 at 197 pounds and Juan Mora (141) and
Brett Gordon (149) are currently No. 5 seeds. Seefeldt has lost to Monteiro
five times in five tries this season to mar an otherwise sterling 24-12
record.
Bakersfield leads the all-time dual series vs. Fullerton by a 21-2 count
and has won the last 8 meetings. The teams have not met since 1999.
Fullerton beat Menlo twice last year, 26-9 in the season openr at UC Davis,
and 21-18 in January in Prescott, Arizona.
