Cal State Fullerton won the final three matches Friday evening - two of them by major decision - after UC Davis won five of the first seven as the Titans rallied to tie the Aggies, 20-20, in a Pac-10 Conference wrestling match before 326 fans at Hickey Gym.
UC Davis moved to 4-3-1 overall and 3-2-1 in conference action while Cal State Fullerton is 13-3-1 and 5-1-1. Ronnie Silva had an 11-3 major decision upset against 18th-ranked Leonel Sanchez at 174 pounds, part of three straight wins for UC Davis which helped stake the Aggies to a 20-6 lead.
However, Landon Seefeldt (197) and #18th-ranked Jesse Miramontes (125) had major decisions sandwiched around a pin by Chris Chambers at heavyweight which propelled Cal State Fullerton to the 20-20 deadlock.
No.13-ranked Derek Moore got the Aggies off to an early lead with a 14-2 major decision against Paul Tice at 133, using four takedowns on his way to the win. Juan Mora then jumped to a 4-0 advantage against the Aggies' Jeff Bristol at 141 and went on to a 6-2 win that made the team score 4-3.
A three-point near fall helped take Daniel Murphree to an early 6-2 lead in his 10-4 win over the Titans' Jeff Silva at 149 before Morgan Atikinson's 15-9 win against the Aggies' Jesse Padilla made it 7-6 in favor of UC Davis.
That set the table for three Aggie wins that began with an 11-2 victory by Frank Richmond over Risto Marttinen at 165, a win that started with Richmond scoring the first eight points. Silva then upset Sanchez at 174 after a reversal, three-point near fall, takedown and riding time turned a 3-2 deficit into a crowd-pleasing 11-3 major decision win.
Brandon Bear finished the win streak by nearly pinning Jesse Taylor, instead settling for four takedowns and three near falls in his 17-2 technical fall win which pushed UC Davis' lead to 20-6. Cal State Fullerton, however, rallied down the stretch beginning wih No.9 Landon Seefeldt's 19-6 victory over Reed Shelger at 197.
Broc Maffia was hobbled by an early injury in his heavyweight match against Cal State Fullerton's Chris Chambers, a bout Chambers finished with a pin 1 minute, 45 seconds in. That brought the team score to 20-16 in favor of UC Davis before Miramontes beat Pancho Manriquez 13-5 at 125, getting a key point for riding time which turned his win into a major decision and ended the match in a 20-20 tie.
