Landon Seefeldt shook off a rib cage injury to score
a 12-4 major decision over Oregon State's Travis Gardner at 197 pounds
Friday night that lifted Cal State Fullerton to a 20-17 wrestling victory
over the Beavers in Corvallis.
The win gave the Titans a day-night sweep of the Oregon Pac-10 schools
(Fullerton earlier in the day won at Oregon, 29-12), improved their record
to 11-3 overall and 5-1 in the Pac-10, gave Oregon State its first conference
loss and handed Coach Dan Hicks his first win over his alma mater in three
tries.
Seefeldt was injured during the week in practice and had to default his
afternoon match in Eugene.
Oregon State won the heavyweight bout to begin the competition with a
4-0 lead, but Fullerton's No. 19-ranked Jesse Miramontes (125) tied the
match with a major decision over Eric Stevenson. OSU
went ahead, 7-4, at 133 but Juan Mora logged a pin at 141 for a 10-7 Titans'
lead. Jeff Silva won for Fullerton at 149 but the Beavers won the next
two matches to take a 14-13 lead.
Leonel Sanchez' 10-5 decision over Jeremy Larson at 174 pounds put Fullerton
back in the lead at 16-14, but the Beavers' Dan Pitsch beat Fullerton's
Jesse Taylor at 184 for a 17-16 OSU lead. The No. 10-ranked Seefeldt erased
that and dropped OSU to 9-5-1 overall and 4-1-1 in the Pac-10.
Fullerton travels to Boise State for a pair of matches
Sunday with the host Broncos and Montana State-Northern.
