Pin Nails down Fullerton Win over Fresno State Juan Mora pinned Garrett
Spooner in 1:16 of the 141-pound bout Wednesday night to nail down a 24-15
non-conference wrestling victory for Cal State Fullerton over Fresno State.
The Titans are now 2-1 in dual matches while the Bulldogs were making
their season debut.
Fullerton took a precarious 18-15 lead into the final bout but Mora took
an early 5-0 lead with a takedown and a near fall and then had Spooner
on his back in the second minute.
After the teams split the first four decisions, Jesse Taylor put Fullerton
ahead to stay with an 11-5 decision at 184 pounds over Jatinder Chatha.
At 197 pounds, Fullerton’s Landon Seefeldt then pinned Deveraux
Solis, who was wrestling up three weight classes, for a 15-6 lead. But
Fresno State got a pin at heavyweight from Clint Walbeck to make it 15-12.
Jesse Miramontes held on for a 3-2 Fullerton win at 125 but Joe Mavins
beat Paul Tice, 14-7, at 133, to draw Fresno State within striking distance
again. Tice avoided a major decision in the final seconds with an escape
or the Bulldogs would have been in position to win with a Spooner decision.
Fresno State was weakened by the absence of 197-pound standout Marcio
Botelho, who came down with the chicken pox. He won the Fullerton Open
Tournament on Nov. 20.
Both teams head to Las Vegas tomorrow to compete Friday and Saturday in
the Cliff Keen Invitational.
