Titans
down Matadors, 2-0, in Big West opener Oct. 5, 2001 Fullerton, Calif. Box Score Senior Tennli Ulicny and junior Michele Bannister each tallied a goal on the night to help propel host Cal State Fullerton to a, 2-0, victory on Friday night over visiting Cal State Northridge in the Big West Conference women's soccer opener for both teams at Titan Stadium. The Titans improved to 6-4-0 overall on the season and 1-0 in league play. Fullerton has won its last five consecutive matches and six of its last seven. Of those six wins, five have been shutouts and the five-straight wins are just one short of tying the school record for consecutive victories set back in 1996 (six straight wins). The Matadors fell to 6-2-1 and 0-1 in the Big West. Fullertons league-best offense had Northridges league-best defense playing a lot in their own end to a scoreless first half before the Titans broke through in the 72nd minute. Ulicny took a pass in the box from Bannister and broke through two defenders before looping the ball over the charging goalkeepers head for the game-winner. Cal State Fullerton added an insurance goal in the 83rd minute, as Bannister found the ball at her feet after a cross by teammate Jenny Mescher and a header by Kellie Cox to the right side of the box. Bannister then curled a shot far post from about 10 yards out to make it 2-0. The Titans outshot the Matadors, 19-8, and held a 6-2 advantage in shots on goal. Fullerton freshman Julianna Elliott, who was making her first career start, made just two saves en route to her first career win and first career solo shutout. She had shared two shutouts with the Titans other keeper Laura Janke this season. Lisa Gouveia and Shannon DeVos led Cal State Northridge with two shots apiece. Cal State Fullerton closes out its six-match homestand on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 7) at 12 p.m. with a Big West Conference match against the Pacific Tigers at Titan Stadium.
