Titans
Edge Cal State Bakersfield, 2-1, in Scrimmage AUG. 26, 2001 Bakersfield, Calif. It may have been an early season exhibition game, but Cal State Bakersfield and Cal State Fullerton played 90 minutes of entertaining soccer Sunday night in a 21 Titan win on the CSUB Main Soccer Field. Since the game did not count in the standings, both teams used the opportunity to play the bulk of their rosters. Solid performances from both starters and reserves kept the outcome in doubt until the closing seconds. Freshman Kelli Cox was the most dangerous player on the pitch for Fullerton. She proved her worth several times in the first half, finally finishing a scoring chance she created on her own in the 28th minute. She followed a clean steal deep in Bakersfield territory with a short run into the box. She then curled a low, leftfooted shot just inside the far post, giving CSUB goalkeeper Stephanie Hall (Bakersfield/Garces HS) no chance. A CSUB defensive breakdown and a solid corner service from sophomore forward Danielle Turnquist resulted in Fullertons second goal early in the second half. Turnquist sent a perfect corner kick to the middle of the CSUB box, where freshman midfielder Erica Jacalone rose unmarked to give the Titans a 20 lead. It was the Roadrunner reserves who got a goal back for Bakersfield barely two minutes later. Sustaining pressure deep in Fullerton territory, freshman Aime Gralla (Palm Desert HS) swung a long cross through the box to fellow freshman Meghan Haversack (Lodi/St. Marys HS). Haversack found sophomore Carrie Montague (Bakersfield/Stockdale HS) between defenders and Montague slotted the ball home. Both teams had chances to score again. Fullerton reserve goalkeeper Julianna Elliott smothered three secondchance efforts to thwart the Runners while Hall, freshman goalkeeper Mandy Cutshall (Bakersfield/Stockdale HS) and freshman sweeper Erica Craven (Bakersfield/Ridgeview HS) stunted an equal number of Fullerton counter attacks. The Titans open the season next weekend when they host UCLA, Portland and Denver in the FILA Classic.
