Titans Set School-Record with 2-0 win over Idaho
Oct. 12, 2001 – Moscow, Idaho

Box Score

The Cal State Fullerton women’s soccer team set a school record with its seventh consecutive victory while also notching its sixth shutout win of the season as the Titans blanked Idaho, 2-0, in Big West Conference action on Friday afternoon at Guy Wicks Field in Moscow, ID.

Fullerton improved to 8-4-0 overall on the season and 3-0-0 in league play, which marks the best start for a Titan team in conference action since 1996 when the Titans won four straight to open Big West play. The Vandals fell to 6-5-3 overall and 0-2-1 in Big West play.

The seven-straight wins for Cal State Fullerton surpasses the record of six-consecutive victories which had stood since the 1996 season. The Titans look to tie the record for the longest unbeaten streak in the program’s history with a victory on Sunday, which was also set in 1996 when Fullerton went 7-0-1 during one stretch.

After a scoreless first half which saw Idaho outshoot Fullerton, 13-7, the Titans got on the board in the 65th minute of the match, scoring on a penalty kick by senior mindfielder Tennli Ulicny for the eventual game-winning goal. Ulicny now ranks fourth all-time in career goals (16) and stands one point behind Kelly Bogan for fourth place in career points with 45.

The Titans added an insurance goal exactly five minutes later as junior Jenny Mescher scored her sixth goal of the year in the 70th minute on an assist by teammate Erica Jacalone for the 2-0 advantage.

Sophomore goalkeeper Laura Janke showed no signs of the injury which kept her out of last weekend’s Big West openers, making a season-best 11 saves on the afternoon for her third solo shutout this season, which ranks third on the single-season list. Her six career shutouts are tied for second on that list and, with the 11 saves, she moves into fourth on the single season list (62) and third on the career list (116). Idaho keeper Tricia Haynes made 10 saves for the Vandals in net.

The Vandals outshot the Titans, 24-18, marking only the fifth time in 12 matches that Fullerton has trailed in the shots category. Idaho also held an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks while the Titans amassed 11 fouls to the Vandals’ six.

With its two second-half scores this afternoon, Cal State Fullerton has cemented its claim to the title “Second Half Team,” scoring 26 of its 34 goals (including overtime) after the break this season.

Cal State Fullerton closes out its short road trip with a match on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 14) at 12 p.m. as the Titans take on Utah State in Logan, UT.
