Mescher's
Goal Lifts Titans Over 49ers, 1-0 Oct. 19, 2001 Fullerton, Calif. Box Score Cal State Fullerton junior forward Jenny Mescher scored the lone goal of the match in the 70th minute and the Titan defense held off nine Long Beach State shots en route to a, 1-0, Big West Conference womens soccer victory on Friday night at Titan Stadium. A school-record crowd of 1,570 witnessed the victory, surpassing the schools previous high of 1,150 fans who attended the Cal State Fullerton-USC match back on Sept. 27, 1995. The Titans improved to 9-5-0 overall and 4-1 in the Big West Conference for first place. Long Beach State fell to 3-8-1 overall and 2-2 in league play. After a scoreless first period, the Titans found the back of the net for the lone goal of the game midway through the second half. Senior midfielder Tennli Ulicny took the ball on a throw-in at about the seven yard line and somersaulted it out to Mescher waiting at the top of the box. Mescher then settled the ball and fired to the upper right corner of the frame past 49ers goalkeeper Jihan Elgazzar for the game-winner. The goal was Meschers seventh of the season, tying her with teammate Michele Bannister for the team lead. With the assist, Ulicny moves into a tie for fourth place on the all-time scoring list with 46 points along with Kelly Bogan (1995-98). Cal State Fullerton outshot Long Beach State 12-9 and held the advantage in corner kicks, 8-2. Titan sophomore goalkeeper Laura Janke earned her fourth solo shutout on the season. Janke moved into second place on the career shutouts list with seven, trailing Suzy Strazzulla for first-place on that list with nine. Janke is also tied with Strazzulla on the single-season shutouts list, needing one more to tie for first. With its second-half goal this afternoon, Cal State Fullerton has cemented its claim to the title Second Half Team, scoring 27 of its 35 goals (including overtime) after the break this season. Cal State Fullerton closes out its final homestand of the season on Sunday afternoon as the Titans celebrate their seniors before taking on UC Irvine at 1 p.m. at Titan Stadium. Tennli Ulicny, defender Kelly Keohen and forward Heather Storrs will be honored before kick-off.
