Northern Arizona edges Cal State Fullerton, 2-1

Northern Arizona senior forward Holly Jones came off the bench to score two goals and help pace the Lumberjacks to a, 2-1, victory over Cal State Fullerton in the opener of the 2001 UC Irvine/NIKE Invitational on Friday night at Anteater Stadium.

The Titans fell to 0-3 overall on the season with NAU improved to 2-0. Cal State Fullerton will face SUNY-Stony Brook on Sunday (Sept. 9) at 11 a.m.

Jones' first goal came in the 41st minute on a direct kick to give NAU a 1-0 lead heading into halftime. Freshman Kellie Cox scored the Titans lone goal, and her second of the season, rocketing a bullet from 25-yards out from fellow freshman Erica Jacalone in the 67th minute to knot the score at 1-1.

Cox has scored two of the Titans' three goals this season while Jacalone has both assists for the team this season.

The game-winner came in the 76th minute when Jones struck again, beating Titan keeper Laura Janke from 10 yards out for a lead NAU would not relinquish.

Cal State Fullerton played a physical match, amassing 17 fouls to NAU's seven, and was hit with three yellow cards on the night. The Titans outshot the Lumberjacks, 25-11 and had five corners to NAU's three.

Janke made eight saves on the night for the Titans. Cox, junior Jenny Mescher and senior Tennli Ulicny led the team with five shots apiece on the night.
