No. 3 Portland edges Cal State Fullerton, 3-2
Sept. 3, 2001 – Fullerton, Calif.

Box Score

University of Portland junior Emily Patterson scored what would eventually be the game-winning goal in the 85th minute and the No. 3 Pilots held off a late surge by Cal State Fullerton to eke out a 3-2 victory over the host Titans in the final match of the 2001 FILA Classic at Titan Stadium on Monday afternoon.

Cal State Fullerton falls to 0-2 overall on the season while Portland improves to 1-1 overall. The Pilots claimed second place in the tournament over Denver due to goal differential. UCLA won the championship, posting victories in both matches this weekend.

The Titans hung tough with the Pilots, trailing just 1-0 at halftime. Portland drew first blood on a goal by junior Erin Misaki, who followed her own blocked shot and found the back of the net.

Cal State Fullerton evened things up in the second half thanks to a superb effort by freshman Kellie Cox. Fellow freshman Erica Jacalone dribbled into the box and found Cox on the left wing, who promptly punted the ball far post past the outstretched hands of Portland keeper Cristin Shea to knot the match at 1-1.

The Pilots threatened to run away with it, regaining the lead in the 70th minute when freshman Christine Sinclair caught Fullerton keeper Laura Janke out of position off a free kick by Misaki for a 2-1 lead. Portland made it 3-1 when Patterson ran the give-and-go with Sinclair and beat Fullerton keeper Laura Janke far post from the top of the box.

The Titans were not to be stopped, however, as freshman Deanna Plascencia scored her first collegiate goal with 17 seconds remaining in the match, firing a shot through the defense after Shea dropped the ball to make it 3-2.

Cal State Fullerton next travels to Irvine as one of four teams to compete in the UCI Nike Invitational on Sept. 7 & 9 at UC Irvine. Along with the host Anteaters and Titans, Northern Arizona and SUNY-Stony Brook are scheduled to compete. Action begins on Friday at 6 p.m. with Cal State Fullerton and Northern Arizona.
