Titans
thwarted in overtime by San Diego State, 3-2 Sept. 17, 2001 San Diego, Calif. Box Score San Diego State senior Kim Castellanos scored five minutes into overtime as the Aztecs earned a hard-fought, 3-2, overtime victory against visiting Cal State Fullerton on Monday night in non-conference women's soccer action at the SDSU Sports Deck. Cal State Fullerton fell to 1-4 overall on the season as all four of its losses have been by a one goal margin. San Diego State improved to 3-2 overall with the win. The Aztecs raced out to a 2-0 lead after the first half, opening the scoring with a goal by senior defender Fay deLeon on a high-looping shot from 45 yards out that sailed over Titan goalkeeper Laura Janke's head and into the net. Another long ball by deLeon set up teammate Jane Specht for SDSU's second goal in the 27th minute for the advantage. Cal State Fullerton responded in the second half, tying the game with a pair of goals in a three-minute span midway through the period. In the 62nd minute, junior Michele Bannister played a short corner to freshman Erica Jacalone, whose cross found the head of senior Tennli Ulicny, who nodded it past the keeper to cut the lead to 2-1. Almost three minutes later, Ulicny flipped the ball on a throw-in and found the feet of Bannister, who punched it past the keeper to even the score at 2-2. However, deLeon had the last word for the Aztecs, intercepting a pass on defense and dribbling 60 yards downfield before firing a cross to Castellanos on the right side, who buried it into the upper right corner of the net for the game-winner. The Titans outshot the Aztecs, 18-16, and played a more physical contest, amassing 26 fouls to San Diego State's nine. Janke made five saves for Cal State Fullerton. With her three points on the night, Ulicny moved into a tie for fifth place on the school's all-time scoring list. She needs 12 more points to pass Kelly Bogan (1995-98) for fourth place. Cal State Fullerton next faces Loyola Marymount and Southern Utah this weekend at the Titan Stadium. The Titans and Lions will hook up on Friday (Sept. 21) at 7 p.m. and will face the Thunderbirds on Sunday (Sept. 23) at 1 p.m.
