Mescher's Hat Trick keys 8-0 rout of Southern Utah

Cal State Fullerton junior forward Jenny Mescher tallied three goals on the afternoon and the Titan offense scored three times in the first 2:09 of the match as Fullerton went on to post an, 8-0, shutout victory over visiting Southern Utah on Sunday afternoon in a non-conference women’s soccer match at Titan Stadium.

The Titans improve to 3-4-0 overall this season and have posted victories in three of their last four matches. The Thunderbirds fall to 0-7-0 overall.

The eight goals scored by Cal State Fullerton on the afternoon match the eight scored against UTEP back on Sept. 8, 1996 for the second most goals scored in the history of the program. The 22 points (eight goals, six assists) scored by the Titans ranks in a tie for third all time, matching the 22 points scored against North Texas on Oct. 13, 1996 (six goals, 10 assists).

The school record for goals is nine against Azusa Pacific on Oct. 9, 1996 and the school mark for points is 27 in that same match (nine goals, nine assists).

Cal State Fullerton wasted no time getting on the board, scoring 28 seconds into the contest on a goal by Mescher, who took a short pass behind Southern Utah goalkeeper Megan Flowers and knocked it in for a 1-0 lead. The Titans scored 45 seconds later on a similar play, this time, freshman Erica Jacalone took the ball from teammate Nadia Hernandez for a 2-0 lead. Mescher scored her second goal of the match 56 seconds later, on a shot from the right side to make it 3-0.

Senior Tennli Ulicny made the score 4-0 in the 28th minute on a penalty kick as the Titans went in to the lockerroom comfortably ahead at the break.

Fullerton continued the onslaught in the second half as junior Kim Houg made the score 5-0 on a ball from teammate Michele Bannister, drawing out the keeper and beating the defense into a wide open net. Mescher completed the hat trick in the 86th minute, taking a long cross from teammate Ashley Relf and firing from 20 yards out for a 6-0 lead.

Ulicny scored her second on the day 57 seconds later, taking a cross from teammate Kellie Cox which went off the keeper’s hands before punching it home. Jacalone completed the scoring for the Titans, firing a rocket from the top of the box and beating the keeper left post for the 8-0 victory.

The Titans outshot the Thunderbirds, 33-7, and held the advantage in shot on goal, 15-2. Fullerton goalkeepers Laura Janke and Julianna Elliott shared the shutout for the second time this season while Elliott made two saves on the afternoon.

Cal State Fullerton continues its homestand this weekend, facing Wyoming on Friday (Sept. 28) at 7 p.m. and San Francisco on Sunday at 1 p.m. Both matches are to be played at Titan Stadium.
