Bannister's "Golden Goal" lifts Titans in double OT
Oct. 7, 2001 – Fullerton, Calif.

Box Score

Cal State Fullerton junior midfielder Michele Bannister slammed home the game-winning goal 10 minutes into the second overtime to help the Titans come from behind and defeat the Pacific Tigers, 2-1, in a Big West Conference women’s soccer match on Sunday afternoon at Titan Stadium.

The Titans improved to 7-4-0 overall and 2-0 in the Big West. It is the first time since 1996 that Fullerton has opened league play with a 2-0 mark. The Titans also won their sixth straight match, tying the school record set in 1996. Pacific saw its four-match winning streak snapped and fell to 8-3-0 overall on the season, 1-1 in Big West play.

The Tigers got on the board in the first period despite being outshot 8-4 by the Titans. Freshman Kimberly Force took the ball up the left side and broke in on Fullerton goalkeeper Julianna Elliott, who came out charging. Force sidestepped Elliott and buried the ball far post into a wide open net for a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute.

Fullerton came out on a mission in the second half, outshooting Pacific 10-2 and evening the score on Bannister’s first goal of the day in the 83rd minute. Sophomore Danielle Turnquist’s long cross from the right side sailed over the head of Pacific goalkeeper Megan Pickering and found the head of Bannister at the left post where she headed it home to knot the score at 1-1.

After a scoreless first “Sudden Victory” period, both teams played evenly until Bannister struck again in the 115th minute of the match, pounding home the game-winner into an open net after collecting the ball through a crowd from three-yards out. Freshman Kellie Cox and junior Kim Houg notched game-winning assists on the play.

Elliott, making only her second start of her career, earned her second victory in as many matches, making five saves while facing nine shots. Pickering made six saves on the afternoon and faced 22 shots.

Cal State Fullerton returns to action next Friday (Oct. 12) as the Titans travel to Moscow, ID to take on Idaho in Big West play at 2 p.m. local time. Fullerton will then travel to Utah State on Sunday (Oct. 14) to take on the Aggies at 12 p.m.
