Titans Roll Over USF Behind Bannister's Hat Trick

Cal State Fullerton junior Michele Bannister notched her first Division I hat trick and led an offensive explosion for the host Titans as they rolled to a, 7-2, victory over visiting San Francisco on Sunday afternoon at Titan Stadium.

Cal State Fullerton improved to 5-4-0 and has won its last four consecutive matches and five of its last six. San Francisco dropped to 3-3-0 overall on the season.

The Dons jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead, scoring on a goal by Jodie Tanga in the 14th minute. Tanga took a through ball in the box and beat Titan goalkeeper Laura Janke far post for the score.

However, Cal State Fullerton bounced back in a big way, scoring back-to-back goals by Bannister and freshman Erica Jacalone in a span of 49 seconds to take a 2-1 lead. Bannister made it 3-1 in the 30th minute, beating the keeper from five yards out from the top of the box.

Freshman Kellie Cox added a pair of goals on the afternoon, scoring in the 56th and 72nd minute. They were her fifth and sixth goals of the year to lead the team. Junior Jenny Mescher also notched a goal on the afternoon, scoring 1:31 into the second half after dribbling through the defense and beating the keeper from eight yards out.

Bannister, the 2000 NSCAA/adidas National Junior College Player of the Year at Long Beach City College, completed the hat trick in the 69th minute, taking the ball on the right wing off a long pass from Mescher, then dribbling into the box and beating the keeper far post.

Stacey Caro scored the other Dons goal in the 52nd minute, punching home a rebound after Janke made two point-blank saves in the front of the net. Janke made 10 saves on the afternoon in earning the victory.

The Titans open up Big West Conference play next weekend, taking on Cal State Northridge on Friday (Oct.. 5) night at 7 p.m. before facing Pacific on Sunday afternoon at 12 p.m. Both matches are to be played at Titan Stadium.
