Titans Defeat Alumnae in Final 2002 Exhibition Aug. 31, 2002 Fullerton, Calif.
Cal State Fullerton senior forward Jenny
Mescher scored a pair of goals and assisted on two others to help
lead the 2002 Cal State Fullerton womens soccer team to a 7-0 victory
over the alumnae team on Saturday night at Titan Stadium.
The match was the final tune-up for the 2002 season as the Titans will
open the regular season on Monday (Sept. 2) at 1 p.m. against Eastern
Washington in the final match of the SOCCER TOWN Classic.
Freshman Kandace Wilson
got things going for the 2002 Titans, which featured an all-freshman starting
lineup, finding the back of the net in the 19th minute as her shot deflected
off a defender and found its way past the goalkeeper for a 1-0 lead.
Another newcomer, junior Nicole
Mularkey, made it 2-0 in the 39th minute, heading in a short cross
from freshman Desiree Flint.
The veteran players took over from there as sophomore Erica
Jacalone took a through ball from sophomore Vanessa
Valentine and buried it far post for a 3-0 lead before Mescher kicked
things into overdrive. Mescher made it 4-0 in the 48th minute on an unassisted
goal from the left side of the box, and scored again six minutes later
as senior Kim Houg drew
out the goalkeeper and chipped it to Mescher, who sent it into a wide
open net.
Mescher helped Houg score in the 57th minute, sending a long pass to the
middle of the box as Houg sent it home and, two minutes later, Mescher
fed senior Michele Bannister
in the box to make it 7-0.
The alumnae team was made up of numerous standouts from past Titan teams,
including Tennli Ulicny
(1998-2001), Marla Nelson (1997-00), Alisha Davis (1998-99), Amy Barnes
(1996-99), Kelly Keohen (2001), current Titan assistant coach Dana
Mariotti (1993-94), and Caren Morgan (1994-95).
In earlier action, UC Irvine got two unassisted goals from senior Robyn
Piotrowski to propel the Anteaters to a, 2-0, victory over Eastern Washington
in the first match of the 2002 SOCCER TOWN CLASSIC.
UCI is 1-0 overall on the year while Eastern Washington fell to 0-1.
Piotrowski got the Anteaters on the board in the 20th minute (19:01),
teeing a shot up from 25 yards out and beating the Eagle goalkeeper for
the 1-0 lead. She added her second goal of the match in much the same
fashion, capitalizing on botched clear attempt by the EWU defense and
sending a shot into the back of the net from the top of the box.
Senior goalkeeper Sarah Swancutt faced just three shots and made two saves.
UCI held an 21-3 advantage in shots.
