Fresno State's Erin Sayegusa scored in the 76th minute and the Bulldog
defense played keep-away for the remainder of the period as FSU came from
behind to defeat host Cal State Fullerton, 2-1, in a non-conference women's
soccer match on Sunday afternoon at Titan Stadium.
The Titans fell to 11-3-1 overall and have dropped two of their last three
matches. The Bulldogs improved to 7-11 overall.
The loss snapped Cal State Fullerton's home winning streak at 13 consecutive
matches dating back to the 2001 season. It is the first loss at home this
season - the last team to do so in the Big West this year.
After the two teams battled through a scoreless first half, Cal State
Fullerton got on the board first in the 48th minute as sophomore Erica
Jacalone (Temple City, Calif.) took a pass from freshman Elizabeth
Dokulil (San Clemente, Calif.) put home a right-footed shot to the
right post for the 1-0 lead.
The was about all the offense the Titans could muster as Fresno State
began its comeback in the 70th minute when Kortney Lewis chipped a ball
over a diving Fullerton goalkeeper to knot the score at 1-1. FSU's Katri
Nokso-Koivisto notched an assist on the play.
The Bulldogs put it away six minutes later when Sayegusa found the ball
at her feet from eight yards out and fired home the game-winner.
Cal State Fullerton outshot Fresno State 14-9, including a 9-5 advantage
in shots on goal.
The Titans return to action on Friday (Nov. 1) at 7 p.m. as they take
on Cal Poly in Big West Conference action at Titan Stadium.
