Long Beach State forward Abie Curry notched the game-winner with 22 seconds
remaining in regulation as the host 49ers stunned the No. 25 Cal State
Fullerton women's soccer team with a 2-1 Big West Conference victory over
the Titans on Friday afternoon at George Allen Field in Long Beach, Calif.
The Titans fell to 10-2-1 overall, 4-1 in the Big West. The loss snapped
Cal State Fullerton's seven-match winning streak and eight-match unbeaten
streak. Long Beach State improved to 4-7-4 overall and 2-0-2 in league
action.
The 49ers got on the board first in the 22nd minute as forward Kristin
Travis one-timed a cross from Sarah Gamet to the far post for the 1-0
lead.
The score remained that way until the 58th minute when freshman Desiree
Flint (Redondo Beach, Calif.) answered with a one-timer of her own, taking
a cross from Kandace Wilson (Walnut, Calif.) and Vanessa Valentine (Encinitas,
Calif.) at the top of the box and firing it home to knot the score at
1-1.
Both teams played even the rest of the way until Curry knocked home the
game-winner through a charging Titan defense in the 90th minute.
Long Beach State outshot Cal State Fullerton, 15-14, including a 10-3
advantage in the second half.
Titan junior goalkeeper Laura Janke (Simi Valley, Calif.), who was making
her first start of the season in only her second match back from injury,
made eight saves on the afternoon.
Cal State Fullerton returns to action on Sunday (Oct. 20) when it travels
south to face UC Irvine at 1 p.m. at Anteater Stadium.
